It’s Volunteer Appreciation time. Come enjoy brunch with us on Saturday, June 19th, to meet and honor our wonderful volunteers for the work they do to keep SPAWN running smoothly. Volunteers rarely get any accolades for the generous gift of their time, creativity and efforts on our behalf, so here’s our opportunity to thank them.
The brunch is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Mary Embree’s home. If you are coming you must make reservations so that we know how much food and champagne to provide. It is only $7 for members and $9 for guests.

Writers Workshop

Query Letters and Book Proposals, a new group sponsored by SPAWN and the Ventura County Writers Club (VCWC) meets on the 4th Thursday of each month in Ventura.
The workshop, led by Mary Embree, is open to members only of VCWC and SPAWN at no charge to participants. Workshop materials are available (but not required) for $1.

Mike Hayward of LitNet writes: “There is no ‘log onto’ LitNet address. LitNet is strictly an e-mail kind of thingie. The correct e-mail address for subscribing (free) to LitNet of Southern California is litnet@bigfoot.com with the word ‘subscribe’ in the ‘Subject’ heading.
“The mikehayward@earthlink.net address is always good...for one thing or another,” he adds.
So please disregard my previous instruction (in the May 1999 issue of SPAWNews) but do look into LitNet. It is just chock full of interesting stuff.

Contests
The 1999 ICARUS literary competition is for poetry. Entrants are invited to submit one to three unpublished poems or prose poems, 100 line total limit, on the theme Women in Aviation. Send two copies of entries, one with/one without name and address, together with brief bio, SASE and $10 total entry fee payable to ICARUS, P.O. Box 883, Nags Head, N.C. 27959 by the postmark deadline of July 1, 1999.
ICARUS awards $500 to the winning entry and publishes a chapbook which includes this entry and all finalists selected by the competition judge. This chapbook is introduced at December 1999 ICARUS ceremonies. A copy will be mailed to each entrant; winner receives six.

Submit two copies of an unpublished fiction manuscript, not to exceed 12 double-spaced pages, and a cover sheet with name, address, phone numbers and title. Names should not appear on the manuscript. Submissions may include novel excerpts or stories. No manuscripts will be returned. Entry fee: $7.
Postmark deadline: August 31, 1999.
Paul Green Playwrights Prize
Submit two copies of an unpublished/ unproduced play on any theme. No musicals. Include a synopsis of your script. Submit a cover sheet with name, address, phone number and title. Names should not appear on the manuscript. One copy of your manuscript will be returned if sufficient postage is attached. Entry fee: $12. Postmark deadline: September 30, 1999.
Randall Jarrell Poetry Prize
Submit two copies of one to three unpublished poems, not to exceed 10 pages total, and a cover sheet with name, address, phone numbers and poem titles. Names should not appear on the manuscript. No manuscripts will be returned. Entry fee: $7. Postmark deadline: November 1, 1999.
Prizes range from $500-$1000. Send to N.C. Writers’ Network, 3501 Hwy. 54 West, Studio C, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
Writer’s Digest magazine notified us that they have selected SPAWN.org as one of “The 101 Best Web Sites for Writers.” They tell us that the 101 were culled from their staff’s lists of favorites, as well as from nominations made by about 1,500 visitors to writersdigest.com. The “101 Best” was the cover story of the May 1999 issue of Writer’s Digest.

What’s in the Air: Natural and Man-made Air Pollution by Stephen E. Blewett with Mary Embree, Seaview Publishing, received a very nice review in the May 1999 issue of CHOICE, Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. Among other plaudits, the reviewer states that the authors have “produced a remarkably complete short work on air pollution.”
The Small Publishers of North America (SPAN) has a half-page article on SPAWN in their June issue of SPAN Connection, their monthly newsletter. It is the first in a series of “Partner Profiles” highlighting the organizations that partner with SPAN.
