Editor's Note

by Sandra Murphy

The house is still in chaos as one repair turned into a domino effect—floors before or after paint? Hallway plaster before either? And most of all, where is??? One of the missing items, carefully encased in a plastic bag to avoid the plaster dust, paint splatters and drywall crumbs is my list of member information for renewal reminders. I’ll print out another list and send from that, without the benefit of my notes from previous emails. If you get a duplicate, just remind me in gentle terms. Remodeling doesn’t leave much stamina left for criticism!

Mindless activity like painting walls can give your subconscious a chance to work out problems. I have committed to have my cozy mystery book, DeadTodd, ready for my writer’s group to read in September. The slowdown has been, while many people wanted Todd dead, how many had the opportunity? In the midst of painting walls red, the answer came and gave me the momentum to go on. With the amount of priming and painting still to be done, I should be able to work out all the snags in the story. Now if only I can figure out where that folder went…it’s a mystery.

Market Update

by Patricia Fry

The March 2009 edition of the SPAWN Market Update is designed to inspire, encourage, teach and equip authors, freelance writers, artists, poets, screenplay writers and other creatives for success in his/her chosen field. We, here at SPAWN, spend all month searching for and collecting material for this special, one-of-a-kind newsletter, and this edition is definitely one of our best efforts. For example,

  • We tell you where to go online for legal advice related to copyrights, permissions and so forth.
  • We provide links to hundreds of book review sites. (For book promotion.)
  • We list 8 opportunities for screenwriters and several paying markets for artists and photographers.
  • We reveal 11 opportunities for freelance writers and links to 13 directories of writing jobs.

Do you want to know which writer’s conferences are canceling this year? There are quite a few of them. There are also some publishers, a distributor and over 30 magazines that have gone out of business—find out which ones.

Perhaps you've been receiving SPAWNews in your email box FREE for a few months or for several years. Subscribing was a good move on your part. If you are reading this newsletter, you get many additional points and you are, no doubt, experiencing some new successes in your field as you become educated through our articles and book recommendations, you enroll in some of the writers conferences and contests and you study our Q and A feature.

Now, take the next important and worthwhile step and join SPAWN. It will take only a few minutes of your time, $45 out of your pocket (for a one year membership). You will gain access to the SPAWN Market Update, which is unlike any other publication you currently receive. You will be able to communicate with other members through SPAWNDiscuss and you can post your news and announcements in SPAWNews, which goes out to about 2,000 authors, writers and artists.

Ask the Book Doctor: About Chapter Format, the Library of Congress, and Using Big Words

by Bobbie Christmas

Q: Is there a way to reconcile chapter beginnings using the computer?

A: I’m not sure what you mean by “reconcile,” but this much I know: At the end of each chapter, insert a page break. With a page break at the end of each chapter, when you hit Return three or four times to begin the new chapter, the new chapter will always begin on the same line, the one you just designated, even if you later add or delete lines from prior chapters.

To insert a page break, go to Insert, then Break, then Page Break.

To read more about these and other interesting topics, go to http://www.spawn.org/editing/askthebookdoctor46.htm.

– Bobbie Christmas, book doctor, author of Write in Style (Union Square Publishing), and owner of Zebra Communications, will answer your questions too. Send them to Bobbie@zebraeditor.com. Read more “Ask the Book Doctor” questions and answers at www.zebraeditor.com.

Compliments—we love them!

“I don't say it enough, but I certainly do to other writers: you do a fantastic job with the SPAWN Market Update. This month, I checked out probably half-dozen sites on first read and submitted to 4 of them. I read a lot of writing e-zines and the Market Update is one of the best out there with a great deal more helpful information.&rduo;

Good news from Leon Cooper:

Discovery Channel will license his new documentary Return to Tarawa-The Leon Cooper Story. The 47-minute documentary, narrated by Ed Harris, is based on his return to Tarawa a year ago. In November, 1943, he served as a Navy landing craft officer, landing assault troops on Japanese-defended beaches during the three days that became known as “Bloody Tarawa.” More than 6,000 men were killed including 1,300 US Marines with an additional 2,500 wounded. He returned with a camera crew to film the garbage that covers the hallowed ground called Red Beach and learned that more than 200 Americans still lie where they fell sixty-five years ago—including a Congressional Medal of Honor winner. Live ammunition (ours) lies everywhere on the tiny, densely populated island. Current Discovery plans call for showing it, beginning in April. They have exclusive license rights in the US and Canada but Leon will be able to sell the DVD copy of the film throughout the world.

Leon is writing a novel, Remembering Private Somes. It's fact and fiction. Somes was a young Marine who lies in an unmarked grave on the island, forgotten by our nation but remembered by the Aussies and New Zealanders on “Anzac Day.”
